Significance
This is the fourth year offering "A Radio Christmas Carol" as a live, community performance. And, the fourth year for collaboration between Re-Imagined Radio, The Willamette Radio Workshop, and Kiggins Theatre.
Producer's Notes
Audience count: 300+.
Rather than paid admissions, audience members donated non-perishable food items for The Clark County Food Bank.
Donations of 763 pounds of food and $325.00 provided 2,228 meals for hungry families in Clark County.
Tonight's performance is inspired by the December 23, 1938 episode of The Campbell Playhouse starring Orson Welles as Ebeneezer Scrooge, and featuring other members of the former The Mercury Theatre on the Air.
Following the response to the October 30, 1938 radio adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel The War of the Worlds, Campbell Soup became the sponsor for Mercury Theatre on the Air. The program name was changed to The Campbell Playhouse. The first performance under this new name was "Rebecca," December 9, 1938.
This popularity, and the spirit of the story are, we think, most appropriate to this holiday season. The message of tonight's performance—humanity far outweighs riches—is most important as we contemplate the changes and uncertainties ahead of us, as a culture, a community, a country.
With tonight's performance we conclude our fourth season. Looking ahead, I hope you will join us in the spring when we will offer a collection of short science fiction stories adapted for the radio medium entitled "City of Weird." And next fall, please watch for a performance with the working title of "Laugh Your Dial Off," samples from classic radio comedy programs. We hope you will join us for both.
Thanks to The Willamette Radio Workshop, under the direction of Sam A. Mowry, who once again, have left the comforts of metropolitan Portland, and braved crossing the mighty Columbia River to share their vocal and sound effects talents with us tonight.
Thanks to Dan Wyatt and his staff here at the Kiggins Theatre for hosting tonight's performance.
Thanks to the CougParents Fund of Washington State University for their generous financial support. Thanks to local businesses and organizations—like Riverview Bank and Vancouver's Downtown Association—for their past support. Thanks to Gerald Gaule, who is engineering tonight's live streaming broadcast.
And, a special thanks to all you here with us and listening at home. Without your ears it would matter
not what we do here tonight. Enjoy the performance and best holiday wishes!
